Tag Team BRAWL

by John Spey

Recently at ShoreCon we played a lot of Brawl and decided that the regular rules for the game were too slow and not nerve-racking enough, so in a state of true sleep deprivation we developed the following rules for Tag-Team Brawl.

  1. Get 4 people together, each with a different deck. Pair off into two teams of two each. Everyone sits at the same table next to his partner and across from the other team.
  2. The game is played exactly the same as regular Brawl except for the following differences:
  • There can be a maximum of four bases in play instead of three (you still can't clear a base surrounded on both sides by another base).
  • Each deck only uses two freezes instead of three.
  • Each team decides which one of its members will be 'tagged in' first. This person puts on of his bases in the middle of the playing area before play starts, like in normal Brawl.
  • Play begins as soon as all four players have signaled readiness (we knocked the table when we were ready, you can do whatever you want).
  • During play each team will have one member 'tagged in'. Only the person on each team that that is 'tagged in' can play cards. To tag the other player in the 'tagged-in' player tags (hits, slaps, bumps into, whatever) his partner, tagging himself out and tagging in his partner.
  • Play continues until all bases in play are frozen.

Example of play:

Pearl and Bennet are playing Darwin and Morgan. They sit according to the following picture:

Bennett
Pearl

table

Morgan
Darwin

Bennet and Darwin decide to start so each puts one base in the middle of the table. All 4 players then suffle their decks and then put two of their freezes on the bottom of their decks. When all 4 players are ready play starts with Bennet and Darwin playing cards like in normal Brawl. Soon, Darwin finds himsel in need of some clears (which he only has one of) so he bumps Morgan with his shoulder and says "You're in!". Darwin stops playing cards and Morgan begins to play. Both sides switch back and forth, tagging in and out, until Pearl, who is tagged in, gets to her freezes. She freezes the one pile she is winning and tags Bennet. Bennet plays until he gets to his freezes. He freezes two piles and tags Pearl back in, who freezes the remaining pile with her last freeze.
