Cheapass Games Eliminates "Cheap"
April 1, 2003
Cheapass Games announced today that it will be removing the
word "Cheap" from its company name. Beginning April
1, 2003, the company will be known simply as "Ass Games."
Since its inception, Cheapass Games has encountered some
difficulties placing its product in so-called 'boutique' game
stores, those with conservative clientele who might be offended
by the "Cheapass" name. The decision to go with
"Ass Games" is a result of years of research and
internal debate, and comes at a time when Cheapass Games has
become one of the most respected brands in the game industry.
Company founder James Ernest sees a bright future for his
new enterprise, Ass Games. "We think this is a bold step
ahead," says Ernest. "We are showing that we have
the courage to assuage the misgivings of a fraction of the
hobby game market to the possible ruin of our core brand.
It's key marketing decisions like this that separate Ass Games
from its competition."
Will the name change be immediate? "Yes," says
Ernest. "We are mounting a massive redacting campaign
called 'Stamp out Cheap' in which we will reprint, sticker,
or mark-with-a-pen every game in our warehouse on or before
April 1st. We are also issuing a recall of Cheapass Games
from every level of the distribution chain: distributors,
retailers, and even consumers." The company is also rolling
out a new ad campaign, featuring the new slogan "Ass,"
which will run in more than 50 assorted gardening, parenting,
and quilting magazines.
Despite the name change, Cheapass Games will continue to
produce inexpensive, irreverent games. To learn more about
